Shopify’s subscription tools were built for developers, not merchants. Rodeo needed something different.

The challenge

Shopify’s subscription marketplace was cluttered with complex, developer-centric tools. Rodeo’s goal was simple: Build a subscription plugin that feels native to Shopify, is easy to set up, and lets merchants manage recurring payments without technical overhead.Key Problems Identified:
  • Existing apps had confusing onboarding.
  • Merchants needed a clear dashboard to track subscriptions.
  • The experience needed to align perfectly with Shopify’s Polaris Design System.

The Approach

We started with clarity, defining user flows and scope before jumping into pixels or code. Using Shopify’s Polaris system in Figma, our design team built wireframes that mapped every possible interaction: from app installation to first subscription setup. Highlights:
  • Designed version 1 installation flow & dashboard.
  • Conducted quick internal testing for UX validation.
  • Used these insights to refine into Version 2, improving hierarchy, navigation, and feedback states.

We followed Polaris guidelines, maintaining Shopify’s visual language while adding Rodeo’s personality through typography and tone.

The Design Process

Key UX Enhancements:
  • Simplified configuration steps into a guided onboarding.
  • Added empty states & inline help for first-time users.
  • Designed a performance dashboard showing subscription KPIs at a glance.
  • Built a settings panel for merchants to control API keys, integrations, and notifications.

Once designs were approved, our engineering team brought them to life using:
  • Frontend: React + Polaris Components
  • Backend: Node.js / Express
  • Platform: Shopify App Bridge & REST APIs
We collaborated closely with the client’s internal developers to ensure a pixel-perfect implementation that matched the Figma design.Focus Areas:
  • Smooth installation and setup flow.
  • Secure connection with Klaviyo & MultiPass APIs.
  • Real-time analytics dashboard with optimized load times.

The Launch

After rigorous QA and sandbox testing, the Rodeo app was successfully deployed on the Shopify App Store.We worked alongside the Rodeo team to finalize store listing visuals, copy, and onboarding documentation for merchants.
