Overview
For decades, recruitment within the UK railway sector operated on an archaic system of raw connections and gut instinct. Critical roles were filled through informal WhatsApp groups or Facebook threads rather than structured processes. This lack of transparency created significant barriers; qualified contractors, particularly women and newcomers, were frequently locked out of opportunities simply because they were not in the right chat groups.This was not merely an inefficiency, it was a safety and compliance risk. Agencies struggled with poor visibility into workforce availability, while contractors wasted hours managing administrative tasks just to get noticed. The industry desperately needed a solution that prioritized skills over connections.
The opportunity
The vision for the Connected Railway Platform came from a founder deeply embedded in the industry, not a tech executive. They witnessed the unfairness of the "who you know" culture and wanted to build a centralized platform that offered equal visibility for contractors and data-backed tools for agencies.However, transforming a non-technical vision into a scalable digital product required deep engineering expertise. The founder needed a partner who could navigate complex compliance requirements and deliver a user experience intuitive enough to migrate thousands of workers from offline habits to a digital app. They needed a comprehensive roadmap to move from a concept to a fully functioning ecosystem in under a year.
The solution
Codieshub partnered with the founder to turn this vision into reality, starting with an intensive five-week discovery phase. We conducted over 20 hours of workshops and interviews to validate user personas, ensuring the product was built on real needs rather than assumptions.Following this, Codieshub engineered a robust, four-part ecosystem using a modern tech stack featuring Flutter, Node.js, and ReactJS. For contractors, we built a cross-platform mobile app featuring geo-filtered job searches and smart push notifications. For agencies, we developed a powerful web platform equipped with AI match scoring and talent forecasting dashboards.We integrated key technologies including Twilio for communication, GetStream for activity feeds, and Google Maps API for radius-based job sourcing. Crucially, we baked compliance logic directly into the hiring flow, ensuring that safety certifications were verified before a match could occur.
