The short answer
When should a company build custom software instead of buying SaaS?
Reviewed November 3, 2026
Build custom software when the cost of bending your business around a SaaS product exceeds the cost of software that fits your workflows, integrations and edge cases exactly. Codieshub has shipped custom software since 2012, starting with written specifications and architecture, then two-week sprints with working software in staging after each one.
Off-the-shelf software fits the median use case. It doesn't fit yours. The workflows you've refined over years, the integrations your operations depend on, or the edge cases that make your product defensible. Custom software is the right answer when the cost of adapting your business to a SaaS product exceeds the cost of building something that fits your business exactly.
Codieshub has designed, architected, and shipped custom software since 2012 across fintech, healthcare, logistics, e-commerce, and SaaS. We know where custom builds fail: under-specified requirements that surface mid-build, architecture that works fine at 100 users and breaks at 10,000, and handoffs that leave clients owning code they can't maintain. Our process addresses all three: written specifications before any code, architecture review at every major milestone, and a codebase delivered with documentation your in-house team can actually use.
Your team works hours that overlap your US or UK day and is senior by default. We staff senior engineers, not juniors with a senior lead reviewing from a distance, because the decisions made in the first few weeks of a custom build determine whether it serves you for years or becomes a rewrite too soon.
How we approach it
From the problem you have to what done looks like.
01The problem
Generic SaaS products force you to work around them: manual handoffs where automation should exist, integrations that almost work, and reporting that misses the metrics your business actually tracks. The workarounds compound over time until your team is spending more time managing tooling than doing the work the tooling was supposed to accelerate.
02How we solve it
We start with a discovery phase that produces written functional specifications, a system architecture, and a delivery plan with milestones, not a vague estimate. Development runs in two-week sprints with working software in staging after every sprint, so you can steer. Senior engineers own the codebase end to end; the same people who write the code review each other's PRs and own the delivery outcome.
03What done looks like
Software that fits your actual workflows on day one and stays maintainable as requirements evolve. Well-scoped custom builds become core infrastructure rather than a stopgap. The goal of every engagement we take on. At delivery you receive full source code, documentation, and a knowledge transfer session so you own what you've paid for.
Why Codieshub
Six things you can hold us to.
Specific to this service, and written into how every engagement runs.
- 01
Built for your workflows
Software designed around how your team actually works, not the median feature set of a generic SaaS product.
- 02
Spec before code
Written functional specifications and architecture review before development starts, requirements surface on paper, not mid-sprint.
- 03
Senior engineers throughout
Not junior-heavy pods with a senior reviewer. The engineers who design the system write the code and own the outcome.
- 04
Steerable delivery
Two-week sprints with working software in staging after each one. You see progress, catch course corrections early, and don't get a surprise at the end.
- 05
No lock-in
You own the codebase, the infrastructure, and the documentation. No black-box platform dependency, no exit fee.
- 06
Built to scale
Architecture that handles your current load and the growth milestones on your roadmap, not an MVP shortcut you'll rewrite in 18 months.
Proof
“An external team can be just as committed and driven as our internal one. Their dedication and attention to detail have made them invaluable.”
“Managing global scale requires extreme technical precision. Codieshub re-architected our funnels to perform under massive pressure.” Ryan Pamplin, Blendjet
“Reliability and scalability are critical for us. They approached the engagement with a strong technical foundation and a clear process.” Farid Huseynov, Kapital Bank

FAQ
What buyers ask on the first call.
Describe what you need, we'll run a discovery phase and give you a written spec and milestone estimate.
Scope my custom buildProject cost depends on scope, complexity, and integrations. Focused custom tools, such as a client portal, an internal operations dashboard or a workflow automation layer, are Production Application builds: $60K to $200K over 3 to 5 months. Larger platforms with custom data models, multi-tenant architecture and external integrations fall in our Enterprise range: $200K+ over 6 to 12 months. We give a written estimate with milestone breakdown after a discovery phase, never before, because estimates without specifications aren't estimates, they're guesses.
Written functional specifications agreed and signed before development begins. Change requests after spec sign-off are welcomed and scoped in writing, with cost and timeline impact documented, before any work proceeds. Sprints are time-boxed with a defined scope; anything added mid-sprint goes into the next sprint's backlog unless it's a critical blocker. You always know what's in scope, what moved, and why.
We match the stack to the problem, not to our preference. Backend: primarily Node.js, Python, and Go for APIs; PostgreSQL, MySQL, and MongoDB for persistence; Redis for caching and queues. Frontend: React and Next.js for web; React Native for cross-platform mobile. Infrastructure on AWS or GCP with Terraform. If you have an existing stack we need to extend or integrate with, we'll work in it: we've built on Rails, Django, Laravel, and .NET on active engagements.
We offer post-delivery retainer support for bug fixes, minor feature additions, and infrastructure management. Most clients retain us at a reduced monthly rate for six to twelve months after launch while their in-house team ramps up. We also offer a full knowledge transfer, documented architecture, and runbooks so you can hand the system to your own team or another vendor cleanly. We don't create support dependencies as a business model.
Yes, code inheritance is common for us. We start with a technical audit of the existing codebase: architecture assessment, test coverage review, security scan, and documentation of what exists. We give you a frank written assessment of what's solid, what needs refactoring before we build on it, and what's a risk. Then we scope the path forward. We've taken over everything from early MVPs to legacy systems in production. We know how to work with real-world code, not just greenfield.
